Happy Friday lovelies!
I'm finally getting around to doing my post for today.... At 9:00pm. It's been a hectic week between school, freelance writing, Fred Penner shows, and general illness - so Film Friday was delayed.
I'm back now though! I know you missed me...........?
You've all heard me talk about the CSA (community supported agriculture) program I'm involved with - Saanich Organics.
Each week a box is delivered to our back door, the old one is taken away and we get 7-10 fresh, local, organic, small-scale grown, seasonal fruits and/or vegetables for a whopping total of $30.00. Each delivery comes with a newsletter describing the news on the farms that provide our bounty, recipes, and even information on what each item is - because let's be honest: when you're eating locally and in season, you don't always know what's in that box. Especially in the middle of Winter. Talk about a steal of a deal!

To hear more about it - and me - check out the interview I did with CSA Farms - that's right. I was interviewed. And I didn't even have to ask them to do it!
And on the same topic...This week we're watching a clip from Dawghaus Studios titled CSA: Community Supported Agriculture in the National Capital Region. If you have any lingering questions about CSA programs, this will answer them. And if you don't, you can just relax and watch some cute farmers and food lovers in action. They're such happy little souls.
Tell me about your food! Where do you get it? What do you eat? What does it eat? What CSA programs are near you? What comes in your box?....(haha)...

This post is linked up with Fight Back Friday; Fresh Bites Friday; Seasonal Inspiration Saturday; Seasonal Celebration Sunday.

Nice! Some interesting points raised that I think about quite a bit - particularly the point about being an organic farmer relying upon conventional farms for manure & other items.
ReplyDeleteBeing truly organic and sustainable requires growing and managing a lot more than people actually see for sale at the market...
And sustainability gets awfully complicated and expensive without animals in the mix...
for sure. i do wish we got meat in our CSA - it's very tricky to figure out where to buy ethical meat - it'd be nice if that was organized for us. hm... i feel a project coming on...
DeleteWhat comes in my box?
ReplyDelete*snerk* That's awesome.
I used to belong to a CSA - but I had to go pick up my veggies. The cool thing was that she had free u-pick herbs AND flowers and in the summer it was a riot of chives, dill and sunflowers. It was an incredible deal. It's too far away to drive now, but I wish I was still doing it. I got turned on (hee hee) to fingerling potatoes, kohlrabi and 8 different kinds of tomatoes.
i love you. ;)
DeleteI totally support this initiative- we have similar programmes here in the UK, but pay weekly rather than upfront.
ReplyDeleteLoved watching the film, thanks for sharing it with us!
Ah yes. I think some are like that here too - just depends on who you decide to go with.
DeleteGreat image of those colorful carrots Kristy. I like the video and your films are always thought provoking and insightful. Last night I had stir fried greens - kale, chard, bok choy & spinach - from my garden! I definitely know where that came from.
ReplyDeleteI'm always conflicted about posting photos of carrots. they're so phallic but so pretty! haha... your greens sound great - I love me some stir fried greens :)
DeleteBeautiful carrots!!! I am so excited to start my new garden! Oh, the many things I will plant, all of course which will be organic and non gmo!!! :) I eat all organic produce. Although I really would love a water filter for my whole apartment, wouldn't that be nice? I'd rather not rinse my veggies and fruits in unfiltered water. Eek! I once ate whatever I wanted whenever, well I have put a stop to that! No more processed foods..and no more meat..well really I'm trying to go vegan and eat a more whole foods plant based diet! So far so good, although I do love my chocolate, and that is hard to over come!
ReplyDeleteWow! Good on ya! it really is about re-educating yourself about what's safe and "healthy" for you and depending on your own bodies rhythms. Like I said in a post this week, it's all about moderation. have your chocolate, but have your happy veggies too :)
