CSA Week #7

Good morning to you my lovelies!

Did you know Spring is coming?? There are always tell-tale signs.

There is daylight for a full 12 hours a day - thank the rotation of the Earth!....

The Daffodils are peeking their little yellow heads out all over gardens in Victoria...

Those tiny white flowers are showing up in back alleys and under shrubs....

The cherry blossom trees are blooming...

When the sun does show up, it has enough warmth in it that I feel an incessant need to go sit on a water front patio and order a beer...

Spring is coming.

Of course, if you looked at our CSA delivery this week, you'd have no idea.

This week's box is almost the quintessential West coast Winter veggie box. All it needs is a few rutabagas (no thank you) and it'd be complete!

This week we got:
  • 1 Massive head of celeriac.
  • 1 Tiny head of kohlrabi.
  • 1 Bag of Braising Greens.
  • 3 Fat Carrots.
  • 2 Winter Radishes (kind of excited about those - they're black!).
  • Some Cilantro.
  • 1 Bag of Sun-Trio Pea Shoots.
  • 1 Ziplock Baggie of Frozen Blueberries.

Anything in this week's catch that excites you? Ideas for cooking?

  1. I am not excited about any vegetables right now. But I HAVE been making my peace with rhubarb.

I have never known what to do with it outside of the obligatory pie starring that tart little show stopper Strawberry.

So I have made bread, crisps, crumbles and I'm using the last of the local Puyallup Rhubarb to make jelly.

It just doesn't seem like a fruit. It's so...prehistoric looking.

(Those carrots are positively phallic. Well played.)

    1. oh rhubarb. sometimes it makes its way into a chutney here. it's so tricky! maybe it just means we shouldn't mess with it? let it have its crisps and crumbles?

ps. phallic is my middle name!

  3. I'm curious to see or read what you do with the celeriac:) I've heard it's really good in soup, but I've never tried it myself!

  4. I would be rinsing some of those beauties, cutting into chunks, drizzling with olive oil, sprinkling with some salt & pepper, maybe a few herbs tossed in and roasting until al dente! These all are just the most yummy later winter-early spring veggies. I have roasted beets before and they were fantastic. What a great CSA box.
This week here in Nashville I planted carrots, beets, more arugula & lettuces as well as ever-bearing strawberry plants. It has been warm and sunny so they are very happy. The time changes to DST this weekend so there will be more day light hours to garden and photo. A Toast To Spring!
