Home Baked Apple Chips (or crisps, if you will)

Good morning lovely blog readers! I trust your weekend went well. Mine was filled with Christmas Truck Parades (well, one parade), dinners out (one dinner out) and a lot of serving hungry eaters and wine drinkers. 


I also finally scored some of the olive oil I mentioned in this post. It came in the mail - all four bottles of the stuff! Review to come... Do you order stuff online? Is so, what stuff? And if not, how come? Getting things in the mail is super fun! Especially if it's things you eat! Speaking of which, watch on the 12th for the Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap reveal! I'm still waiting for my cookies to arrive but I've sent mine out and managed to hoard/inhale a good 12 or so all by myself. So much fun (and so much stretchy pants)...

Speaking of fun and stretchy pants, I have a recipe for you today that is big on fun, and low on stretchy pants. Sort of. Home baked apple chips! We're still getting bundles of apples in our CSA box and I'm trying to come up with new and interesting ways for us to eat them. These chips, were both. Did I mention they were also highly addictive? I think you'll like them. Plus they make your entire house smell absolutely fantastically like Christmas!


Two things: First, be careful with your apple corer if you haven't used one before. I almost took a chunk out of my hand with the first try. Get to know your corer and ease it into the apple before slamming down to remove the core. Second, enjoy!

Home Baked Apple Chips


Ingredients:

4 Small to Medium Sized Apples.
1 C Sugar.
1 C Ground Cinnamon.
Dash or Two of Ground Nutmeg.
Pinch of Salt.

What to Do:
 
Pre-heat your oven to 250 degrees F and prepare two baking sheets with parchment paper.

As that heats, fill a bowl with a cup of water and the lemon juice. Then, cut the bum off the apple so it sits flat and core with a fruit corer - great invention! 


Then slice very thinly (a mandolin is useful!) to 1/8".


In another bowl, combine the sugar, spices & salt. Mix well. Very lightly dredge the apples, a couple at a time, in the mixture. Place in one layer on the baking sheets.

*Don't coat too heavily or the sugar will result in what is essentially apple syrup and the chips won't crisp up. Just plop, flip, and place.


Bake in the oven for about 45 minutes. Flip the apples. And continue baking for a further 40 to 45 minutes. They will continue to crisp up as they cool and you don't wanna make em so hard/crisp they break your teeth!

Once cool, serve with some fantastic ice cream, like Udder Guy's Old Fashioned Vanilla Bean, or all by themselves.

Eat.

  1. i actually tried this once and it worked quite well. you're right about more crisping happening later too. but i'm really drawn to this idea with the cinnamon and sugar!

  3. Ah lady stretchy pants :0) I wouldn't mind a cookie myself.

    MMm I still have two eating apples in my fruit bowl. This could be the recipe to use them up. I used to have a apple corer, not sure If I still do - yur right it is a deadly weapon.

  11. @ Cheap Ethnic Eats: oh thanks! i know, we canadians need to stick together! that being said, i think nationalism is as scary as any other "ism".... so let's be friends because we both have vaginas (presumably).

    @ Eron: thanks lovely! ummm, the corks or the apple chips? The corks last forever (or until they bio-degrate). The apple chips last about a week I'd say. Try to keep em refrige though. Great idea!

  14. Your apple chips/crisps look and sound delicious! The spices are so lovely and Christmassy too, I can just imagine how yummy they make the house smell. (By the way, I have had similar near accidents with apple corers so I know what you mean about being careful!)   15. @ April: They make great gifts too! I've chucked/broken them into mason jars and bowed em up - i'll take photos today.

    PS. they really should do something about those corers.
